Influence of bacteria on phytoplankton cell mortality with phosphorus or nitrogen as the algal-growth-limiting nutrient

چکیده

The effects of bacteria on phytoplankton mortality were studied with phosphorus or nitrogen as the algal-growth-limiting nutrients. Experiments were performed with the &atom Ditylum brightwellii using batch cultures, steady state continuous cultures and batch-mode cultures which were starved for the limiting nutrient after being preconditioned in a chemostat. With phosphorus limiting algal growth, the specific death rates of D. bnghtwellii generally increased upon bacterial inoculation. Bacteria enhanced algal mortality very likely due to competition with D. brightwellii for the limiting phosphate. With nitrogen as the algal-growth-limiting nutlient, however, the presence of hactena had either no pronounced effect on or led to a reduction of the specific death rates of D. brightwellu. Remineralized ammonium was probably partly utilized by N-starved cells of D. bnghtwellii, leading to reduced death rates of the algal cells. Bacteria thus indirectly prolonged survival of D. bnghtwellii population~ under N starvation. This study shows that bacteria can affect phytoplankton survival, which in turn may influence algal species succession. The degree of bacterial influence on algal death kinetics depends largely on the type of nutrient limiting algal growth and on the culture conditions.

Feedback Interactions between Trace Metal Nutrients and Phytoplankton in the Ocean

In addition to control by major nutrient elements (nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicon) the productivity and species composition of marine phytoplankton communities are also regulated by a number of trace metal nutrients (iron, zinc, cobalt, manganese, copper, and cadmium). Of these, iron is most limiting to phytoplankton growth and has the greatest effect on algal species diversity. It also play...

Nutrient limitation of phytoplankton in Chesapeake Bay

This paper presents evidence of a seasonal shift from P to N as the nutrient limiting the accumulation of algal biomass in Chesapeake Bay. Following the winter/spring maximum in freshwater runoff, (1) the ratio of dissolved inorganic nitrogen to soluble reactive phosphorus (DIN/PO,) was greater than the N/P of algal biomass; (2) alkaline phosphatase activity was high; (3) phosphate turnover tim...

Coexistence of algae and bacteria: a test of the carbon hypothesis

The competition between algae and aquatic bacteria for inorganic nutrients puts some constraints on the coexistence of these 2 essential groups in the water column. Based on competition and stoichiometry theories the carbon hypothesis states that, since bacteria are better competitors for nutrients, they may drive themselves to carbon (C)-limitation, so coexistence would naturally arise between...

Relationship between nutrients and phytoplankton biomass based on chlorophyll prediction model in Zribar Lake of Kurdestan, a case study

Zaribar Lake is a little shallow lake in Kurdistan province of Iran and it is faced to eutrophication. The study of phytoplankton biomass-nutrient relations is important in eutrophication management and there are many empirical models to predict phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) based on nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorous) amounts in the lake. Evaluation of these empirical models and compar...
